About

A Fresh Perspective

Photography is more than just a vehicle for capturing the world around me; it provides me with a palette and a set of brushes, with which I paint not only what I see, but also look to express the emotions that are evoked by the scene in front of me in that moment.

Growing up in the Netherlands exposed me to a wide cross-section of visual arts that laid the foundation of my photographic view of all that surrounds me. Early influences were the Dutch Masters of the 17th century, to whom I was introduced by my grandfather during museum explorations; favorites among them are the scenes of quotidian life depicted by Jan Steen and Frans Hals and the vivid landscapes of Jacob van Ruisdael.

My classical high school education was supplemented by the Boijmans Van Beuningen museum, where I spent many a lunch hour exploring its great collection. Here I was introduced to surrealism with a particular love for the approach taken by Salvador Dali; Dali also rekindled my appreciation for the work of Hieronymus Bosch, who often showed the folly of us mortals.

Universal Connections

My approach to any photographic subject is to look for understanding first; in this I look to establish either a connection between the viewer and the subject or capture the connection of the subject with its surroundings. The captured image then aims to portray this connection from a perspective that is part of my personal interpretation.

This interpretation is often a form of externalized introspection, which may alternately display the connection of isolated beings and items with their environment or highlight the whimsy of the profound world, in which we find ourselves. The universe is full of connections, many of which are waiting to be discovered; part of my journey as a photographer is to document these connections.

Any assignment, be it an event, a product shoot or a portrait session is always approached through communication with the client; this is where the first connection is established. Ideas are exchanged and a collaborative plan of action forms, ultimately resulting in a set of images that aim to exceed the expectations of each client.

And, lest we forget, it is important to have fun while practicing the serious business of photography!

    1. Thank you, Adriana. I love your blog, even more because I’m originally Dutch and know many of the sights that I saw on your blog. I mostly photograph landscapes, but I have also done my share of portraiture, which is a bit like a landscape to me, and product photography, as well, particularly food. Looking forward to your return!

      1. Thank you very much, Frank. I wish I had more time for the blog but I do my best. The Netherlands is a great place to live. I visited several times before finally moving here in 2014.

  3. Hi Frank,

I really enjoyed reading your about who you are and you thoughts on your photographic work. Gave me the inspiration to improve my About page as well.

Thank you so much for visiting and following my photography blog; thingsunderstood.wordpress.com. I really appreciate your support and interest in my photography! I look forward to sharing some new work soon.

    Have a great new week,
    Jacqueline 🙂

    1. Hi Jacqueline,

thank you very much for your kindness! Yes, I truly like your photography, as in it you show me a unique perspective on the world. It is clear that you think/feel your images as you capture them, which generates fantastic results.

I also appreciate the experimentation that you do, such as in your series of the Cellist. Through similar experimentation, I have opened up entire avenues of my photography, some of which I will discuss more this year.

The end result is that you also inspire me to look at things differently and not fall into the same groove over and over.

      Have a wonderful week!

      Frank

    1. Blushing….congratulations to you on receiving the award and thank you for giving me a versatile blogger award.

I humbly accept it and will create an appropriate post tonight.

  5. Hi Frank, I’m a traveler from Australia who loves to take photos but am by no means professional. I use a point and shoot camera but it still gets me results I’m happy with. Great to come across your blog, you have some really amazing landscape photography here. Look forward to checking out much more.

    1. Thank you for your kind words! I’ll have to check out your blog, as travel always intrigues me.

Keep in mind that any camera that you use can do the job, as it’s more about how you see that creates a great photo than the equipment that you use. Lots of my images are taken with my iPhone 🙂

  6. HI — Thank you for visiting my blog, AgathaO.com. We have our heritage and possibly a bunch of history in parallel — I moved to the US in 1981, and now live in Western Mass. Love your photos — especially the yoga tree.

    1. I love your blog and the photography that you post. I was born in Rotterdam and got to the US 5 years ahead of you. We do have a significant amount of parallelism.

Btw, the Hidden Walls, Hidden Mills project looks very interesting. When I get some time, I’ll have to learn more about. New England mills are an interesting source of information about the towns we live in.

Thank you for your compliment, and, yes, the yoga tree will feature again and again, as she is my muse!

      Beste groeten!

    1. Thank you so much for telling me this. It makes my day to hear this from you. I am very glad that you like my photos and love it when people get emotional connections with my images.

      Have a wonderful weekend!

    1. Ee, thank you very much for your kind nomination for the Liebster award, which is a really cool award. Unfortunately, I don’t qualify, as I don’t meet one of the criteria. Thanks again for your kindness,

      Frank

  7. Hi, just wanted to say that I love your blog and the photos you take! I’m currently living in The Netherlands as well, and loving every moment of it. Looking forward to keeping up with your posts!

    1. Thank you very much! You’re most kind.

The Netherlands are a great place, as there is much to enjoy. I have been living in the United States for quite a while, but go back to visit my family in the Netherlands on a regular basis.

      have a wonderful day,

      Frank

  8. Hi Frank! Di here.
How lovely to see you’ve clicked on the follow. Welcome! Hope there are things of interest, my photos aren’t a patch on yours, but there are a few I’m pleased with from our trips up river on the boat, especially on clear sunny days! 🙂

  9. Hi Frank ! I loved your interpretation of this week’s WPC. And reading about your perspective and ideas, I would love to see more how you combine your diverse experiences. As for myself, I am Ady and I own a point and shoot camera but I love to take pictures too. Not professional like you but just as you said, we should have fun in doing what we like, so do I 😀 Have a great day !

    1. Thank you very much, Ady! It’s not about the camera, but how you see the world around you and capture it. As a point of reference for cameras used; all the photos in the Yoga Tree series were taken with my iPhone.

It’s all about the fun and getting a way to express yourself.

      Have a wonderful day!

  10. So glad I found your site, Frank! I love photography and a chance to show my landscape and travel experiences. I also wanted to let you know that I had the wonderful opportunity to visit your wonderful country of The Netherlands in the all of 2016. My oldest son and I went to Den Haag. It was sooooo wonderful! I cannot wait to come back!

    1. Thank you very kindly! I just checked out your blog and it looks wonderful! Great to hear that you and your son had a good time in Den Haag. It’s an excellent city to visit with lots to offer.

      1. Yes! The Hague was wonderful. We loved the architecture, the museums, and the friendly people. We also really liked visiting the windmills and the city of Delft. So much history! I just have to get back in “tulip” season! 🙂 Glad you visited my blog, too! Thanks, again!
