Morning Clouds

Taken on a late December morning in 2014, I wanted to capture the high speed clouds crossing the sky and allow the Sun to come out of hiding from behind the lovely tree.

I hope the Lady of the Fields inspires your day as well!

Morning’s Fire

This Winter morning scene was well worth the stop on my daily commute in early 2014.  I had seen the way the cloud formations were coming together and when I noticed that the sun was just coming up, I knew that I had to capture this little bit of morning drama before it disappeared.

I love to hear your thoughts about this snapshot.

Spring’s Thaw

This image came from a walk in early Spring 2011, on a beautiful day that showed the promise of the season that had just commenced.  Walking by this small pond, my eye caught the interesting aspect of having two distinct types of reflection at work: the slightly rippled water and the not-quite-perfect ice.

What attracted me about these reflections is not only the difference, but also the similarity.  In transition from water to ice, the character of the reflection is preserved, as can be seen in a number of the birch trunks.  But then, we also see that the reflection is more muted and diffuse in the ice.

Hope you enjoy this image, as Spring moves forward in the Northern Hemisphere.

Tender-winged beauty

This beautiful creature posed for me during a trip to Magic Wings Butterfly Conservatory & Gardens in Deerfield, Massachusetts.  A small group of us were lucky enough to get this delightful conservatory to ourselves before the general public was admitted.

As the building was still warming up, butterflies were still slow in gearing up for their day, which resulted in gorgeous poses, such as this one.  If you are ever in the area, I’d recommend a visit wholeheartedly, as it is such a peaceful location.

Re-Radiate_MG_9469-Orig
Re-Radiate

This shot came from a trip to one of my favorite places: Tower Hill Botanic Garden in Boylston, MA.  As happens quite often, my mind starts looking for something a little different to shoot,  which is where this shot came from.

Re-Radiate is all about recognizing the power that resides in trees.  Trees store up energy and release it back to us, denizens of the planet Earth.  In the process of doing this, they learn about what goes on in the world around them and store up a history of their environment.  If we listen carefully, they may even tell us about it…

This image was captured with a Canon EOS 5D Mk II using an EF 24-105mm f/4L lens.  Exposure settings were 1/3 second with f/18 at 160 ISO.  A zoom blur technique was used to get the effect in this image.

Daffodil Time!

Today’s nature photo is one of my favorite flowers, the Daffodil.  Their design makes for such an inviting, pleasant flower, calling all pollinators to come in from the breeze.

In terms of color varieties, I prefer the yellow-petalled with the slightly orange trumpet over the white-petalled or overly ostentatious orange trumpets.

Which varieties do you like best?

What is the apple of your mythology?

This challenge, I will start of with a pretty straightforward image of an apple growing in nature; this apple was not anywhere near any orchard, and I could not find any of its relatives nearby.  Pollination must have been a particular challenge for this lone tree, but it managed nonetheless.

Relaxing

This lovely specimen was sitting next to a pond at the College of Simon’s Rock on a fine August weekend, as my wife and I dropped of the daughter for her start of the school year.  He was kind enough to let me sneak up on him, as I was hanging over the edge of the pond, to get a nice view of him.

The peaceful nature, with which he sat there, as if he didn’t have a care in the world, made for a wonderful moment.

Canada Geese, all in a row!

I was nominated by a fellow blogger, Project Relish, for a 7-Day Nature Photo Challenge.

Geese-on-Quinapoxet_1497
Geese on the Quinapoxet

This image goes back almost 12 years, but is one that I still like after all these years.  Of course, the Canada Geese are the main actors in this image, but there’s a bit more to it…

First of all, this was a lovely Autumn day, and I had been tooling around doing a bit of photography, when, all of a sudden, a thought struck my mind that the light would be perfect at the Quinapoxet river in West Boylston, not far from home.  I made it over to the bridge where the river flows into Wachusett reservoir in no time, only to find that I wasn’t the only person with this idea: a number of photographers had taken position on the bridge with nice tripods pointing down the river.

Not easily deterred, I decided to take a different approach and went down to the edge of the river, so that I would shoot from a very shallow angle.  My camera was about 1 foot off the ground during the sequence that I shot to capture these geese.  The shallow angle and whisper of a breeze produced this magnificent reflection of color.  Standing on the bridge would not have resulted in this image.

Also, I discovered that posing geese is not easy, as no amount of brainwaves caused them to line up until this shot, where they are all distinct.  It took more than thirty shots to get this particular one.
