Today we marvel at the sailing felucca on the Nile, experiencing a rich blend of history and serenity
As we were on Elephantine Island in Aswan today, there has been a fair bit of travel on the Nile as part of our day, which truly enriched our experience in this historically vibrant region. During this day, there was a visit to some wonderful tombs of various officials from various time periods of Ancient Egypt, showcasing the fascinating architectural designs and intricate hieroglyphics that tell stories of their lives and legacies. Each tomb revealed unique details that gave us insight into the rituals and beliefs surrounding death and the afterlife in ancient civilization, which I will cover in future posts.
While on the western bank of the Nile, I caught sight of this rather peaceful traversal of the great river…
Sailing the Nile
Sailing a felucca is a truly ancient tradition that is still active these days, attracting both locals and tourists who wish to experience the beauty of the Nile in a unique way. On this day, many travelers traversed the river, their eyes filled with wonder as the sun glinted off the water’s surface. A good breeze filled the sails, making their progress not only swift but also quite efficient, as laughter and conversations filled the air. The gentle rocking of the boat, combined with the stunning views of the ancient temples and lush riverbanks, creates an unforgettable experience steeped in history.
We enjoy the serene experience of photographing a sunrise at Valley of Fire State Park, capturing Elephant Arch.
Some of the most serene moments that I have experienced have been those where there is nothing to do but wait for that moment, while just being present in my surroundings. When photographing a sunrise, those elements really come into play, as those are times when there (mostly) are not crowds of people while waiting for just the perfect amount of light to come across the horizon. The world seems to hold its breath, and everything around you is hushed in anticipation.
Today’s image is from one of those opportunities during my first trip to Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada. We went in early (not too bad to do in November) to catch the sunrise at some of the amazing locations in this park. The Valley of Fire is known for its stunning red sandstone formations, which appear to glow in the early morning light. It creates a magical backdrop that enhances any photograph.
First stop was Elephant Arch, which is near the entrance to the park and sets up beautifully for a silhouetted photo. Standing beneath the arch, I was captivated by the view, an iconic formation that seems to frame the rising sun perfectly. The contrast between the dark shape of the arch and the brightening sky created a striking image that encapsulated the essence of that tranquil moment. The key to capturing such scenes is patience, allowing the light and landscape to come together in a way that feels both effortless yet profound.
Elephant Arch Sunrise
As you can see from this image, all the work is done in the pre-dawn, as it’s about composing in such a way that an interesting sunrise will come into being. The early hours of the day hold a unique magic, one that is often unnoticed when the hustle of daily life takes over. During this tranquil time, the world is bathed in soft hues of blue and purple, gradually transitioning towards the warm glow of the sunrise.
You can see that I set up for the sun rising in the space under the elephant’s head, so that the trunk is framed as well. This careful consideration in composition highlights not just the beauty of the elephant, a symbol of strength and wisdom, but also integrates the dynamic element of the sunrise. The way the light shifts and dances across the landscape adds depth and vibrancy to the scene, creating a harmonious balance between the subject and the background.
The wait for this particular image was about 15-20 minutes, during which time the most important thing to do was to be present and breathe in the wonderful environment that we were in. Immersing oneself in such majestic surroundings can be a spiritual experience. The stillness of the dawn allows for moments of reflection, as the world gradually awakens. Listening to the subtle sounds of natureтАФthe rustling leaves, the distant calls of waking birdsтАФhelps to ground oneself, creating a deeper connection to the setting. This mindfulness is crucial, as it not only heightens awareness of the aesthetic beauty surrounding us but also prepares us to capture that perfect moment when nature bursts into color.
Embrace Sunday Serenity as a day to relax and recharge your mind and body with autumn’s beautiful hues.
Sundays are for kicking back and relaxing, so let’s take a moment and breathe in the serenity that surrounds us when we can! This particular day of the week is often a precious respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, a tranquil oasis where we can recharge and rejuvenate our minds and bodies.
Here is today’s moment…
Autumn Serenity
This image dates back from 2012, a period when I played with lots of different approaches to photography, exploring various techniques and styles that would enhance my artistic expression. In this case, I looked to let the colors speak for themselves by taking the image out of focus and allowing the eyes to take in a sense of autumn, capturing the rich hues of red, orange, and yellow that define the season. This method created a dreamy quality, evoking a nostalgic feeling, as if the viewer is transported to a serene moment in nature where time stands still, inviting reflection and appreciation for the beauty around us. The blurred edges of the image deftly guide the observer’s imagination, urging them to fill in the details with their own memories of fall and the emotions that it stirs within.
A moment of contemplation with the lovely autumnal colors reminds us of the beauty of nature during this season. As we take a deep breath, let the crisp air fill our lungs, awakening our senses and grounding us in the present moment. Engaging in this simple act of mindfulness can transform our Sundays into a more fulfilling experience. Whether it’s sipping a warm cup of spiced tea while watching the leaves dance in the wind or taking a leisurely stroll through a nearby park, immersing ourselves in the seasonal splendor can elevate our spirit and clarity. Let’s cherish this time to reflect on the week past and set intentions for the days ahead, embracing the calming influence of autumn in our lives.
On this rainy Sunday morning, a past autumn reflection from East Haddam; this image captures the early autumn colors in the trees, enhanced by their reflection in a stream.
As the rain is coming down steadily on this Sunday morning, I thought that a quiet autumn reflection from a couple of years ago might be in order.
Here’s that thought…
Reflection on Autumn
This image came about from a bit of noodling and looking for something different, as we were photographing in East Haddam. With some early autumnal color showing in the trees, the reflection in the stream created a bit more depth of those colors.
On a pleasant Sunday, let’s take a look back at Bryce Canyon and the magnificent Natural Bridge.
As we’re enjoying another lovely Sunday, I thought it might be nice to process one of the many landscape images that are still in my backlog (almost feels like I should project manage this backlog ЁЯЩВ ). This is from last November’s visit to Utah and Nevada, where Zion, Bryce Canyon and Valley of Fire were the featured parks.
Here’s a sunny view for today…
Natural Bridge
This feature is along the wonderful drive that goes to so many great vistas. Its name is Natural Bridge, even though this is not a bridge, but rather an arch. Shooting into the sun for this one, I went for a bracketed sequence to increase the overall dynamic range.
A moment of blue hour serenity from the recent workshop that I attended. Showcasing the A.M. Foster Covered Bridge, an intriguing structure built in 1998.
As I’ve worked through a number of the images captured during the awesome workshop from just over a week ago, there is still a bit more to share. Looking at this image, I find it captures a moment of serenity during what is also an intense learning experience.
Here’s a look at this blue hour capture…
Bridge and Blue
The A.M. Foster Covered Bridge is a bit of an anomaly, as it doesn’t connect any roads across a river. Rather, the owner just loved covered bridges, so he had one designed and built in 1998. Nevertheless, it is a great photography subject and appears in many images.
A bit of serenity at Tower Hill Botanic Garden with an eye toward the variations of green colors.
As today was a rather nice day, I decided to spend some time at Tower Hill Botanic Garden in nearby Boylston, Massachusetts. When I went there last week, all of my shooting was in the Infrared part of the spectrum. Today, I went purely for some visible light exploration, as there were many colors of all variety to enjoy.
Here’s one of the images from today’s crop…
Green Abounds!
If my searching is accurate, this is a rather healthy crop of oregano. I was drawn to the symmetries that are everywhere in this noble herb. Little star-shaped plants, reaching up ever higher as they absorb light, water and nutrients along the way.
