This week I’m featuring a pattern that is a bit more intense, which is one of the reasons that it caught my attention. The image is from just over 16 years ago and you won’t be surprised that it was captured at the New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill in Boylston, Massachusetts. The particular visit was early in the month of March, which is a time when most of New England is still experiencing snow and not a lot of color in the natural world around us. As the indoor spaces at Tower Hill are filled with magnificent plants during the winter and early spring, they make great places to get that fix of color and nature! From vibrant orchids to lush ferns, the diverse plant life offers a burst of life and joy that starkly contrasts with the stillness outside. Wandering through the greenhouses, one can feel a sense of rejuvenation, as if nature herself is awakening from a long slumber, preparing to blanket the world in a riot of colors and scents in the months to come.
One of the things that I like to do when I visit these indoor spaces is to look for opportunities to use the light from outside to highlight the intricacies of the structure of the plants. By carefully observing how the sunlight filters through the leaves, I can truly appreciate the delicate veins and textures that might otherwise go unnoticed in artificial lighting. This natural illumination not only enhances the visual appeal but also creates dynamic shadows that dance across the surfaces around them. Moreover, it brings out the wonderful variety of colors, which is one of the aspects of the leaf featured in this post. The interplay of light and shadow creates a captivating backdrop, allowing each hue to shine brightly and inviting viewers to take a closer look at these remarkable natural wonders.
Here’s this week view into a bit of Nature’s structure…

As the light played across this leaf and presented a wonderful palette of texture and color, I found it irresistible! Its subtle shades of yellow, mixed with some more orange-brown shades and dashes of green come together to create a tale of complex, deep-rooted structure that lives within the leaf. It tells a story of complex intricacies, continual rejuvenation, and symbiosis, highlighting the delicate balance that nature maintains in its design. Each vein of the leaf, pulsating with life, is a testament to the intricate processes that allow it to thrive against the backdrop of the changing seasons. The design is one of efficacy and beauty, where every hue and contour not only serves a purpose but also captivates the eye, inviting contemplation of the wonders of the natural world. Such a marvel reminds us of the unseen forces at work, orchestrating life’s vibrant dance through a spectrum of colors, each more enchanting than the last, revealing the interconnection of life and the artistry found in even the simplest of elements.
Technical Details
Photographed with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III using a Canon EF24-105mm F/4 lens. Camera settings were F11 with a shutter speed of 1/30 second at 250 ISO. I did crop the image to highlight the key aspects of this leaf, did a bit of sharpening, and that was about it. Enjoy!
