The Bathroom

Life is full of art, it creates it, becomes it, displays it, and, yes, it even imitates it.

Are we awaiting the young Sorcerer’s Apprentice to appear on the scene to create mayhem with the best of intentions?  Will the broom get a life of its own?  Can a dustpan moonwalk?

A little background

This image goes back about 5 or so years, when I was still very active in photography agility trials.  Well before the action started on this fairground, I stopped by the bathroom, looked and saw this scene in front of me…  The way the light came in through the door and backlit the broom and dustpan; the lines working together turned this ordinary scene into an interesting sight…

I left the bathroom to grab my tripod and camera, so that I could get the shot I wanted before anyone would disturb it, or the light would change.  As I was setting up, a trial worker stopped by to hang up a sign; I got a bit of an odd look, but, as I was that weird photographer, no questions were asked.

Technical Details

Shot with a Canon 1D MkIII and a 24-70mm L lens.  This was a series of of 5 shots, each 1 EV (exposure value) apart around the correct metered exposure.  Processing was done with Photomatix Pro.

    Trial worker must have a good laugh at the expense of the lunatic in the loo:).
    Without the “L” lens, would it have been possible to capture the backlighting of the broom and the pan? Was exposure and lighting corrected / enhanced during post processing?

      Yes, I have gotten som strainge looks during a number of my favorite shots 🙂

      Yes, the backlighting off the broom and pan would work just fine with any lens. The big difference with the Canon L series lenses is near the edges of the F-stop range, where they are superior to regular lenses, and their construction allows them to last and perform for countless years. No need for exposure and lighting correction on this one, as I had the full range of exposure values covered with the 5 shots.

      Thank you! Yes, the warm and cool tones work together rather nicely. Of course, this print does hang in my house…in the bathroom 🙂

        OH! What a perfect place for your image! I love to know that you have it hanging in your home – out of curiosity, is it framed or printed on canvas? Bathrooms can be notoriously bad for prints, but I love the idea of a series of images in my half-bath of bathrooms! Thanks so much for sharing!

        I thought so too 🙂

        I printed it on a metallic paper to lift the color palette just a bit more (paper choice matters to me) and matted and framed it. For me any photo worth printing should be matted and framed, as it greatly improves its presentation.

    For me, it is both Life and Art. I am no photographer but I am fond of taking pictures and I believe that there’s something that’s in that shot that’s more than what meets the eye.

      Thank you for a very insightful comment. I think you’re onto something, which is what drew me to take the photo; the way the lines worked together and the juxtaposition of warm and cool tones make this something that I don’t mind seeing over and over again.

    For an ordinary person, it doesn’t mean anything.But for people who appreciates art, the broom and the pan represents something about life. And the ray of light conveys something deep. If I am going to interpret the photo in my own perspective, the broom is someone who help us clean our mess and the pan to throw our life’s worries, the rays? A reminder that there’s always goodness amidst all adversaries.
