Product Placement

I enjoy puzzles and challenges in my photography. In this shot I try to elevate the paperclip.

I like puzzles and challenges. This is useful in my day job in high technology; I also like to explore various challenges in photography, one of which is lighting subjects in just the right manner. I have taken several courses over the years to hone my skills in this area, which has given me a set of tools for solving these puzzles.

During one of the courses on product photography, I figured that it would be a good challenge to create an interesting image out of an every day object…

Paperclips!

After going to Staples to buy a box of paperclips, I arranged them on a black surface to get a distribution of color. The challenge now was to light them in a way that would be both interesting and would keep the surface all black; I used a single flash for this set up to have the light rake across the paperclips.

The result was a pretty interesting image, especially when seen in a sizable print format.

Welcome to week 159 of the Tuesday Photo Challenge!

After a great week of Technology, I thought it would be fun to switch to some early technology that has affected humanity’s advancement over the ages; so this week, the theme is Wheel! Of course, the Wheel comes in all shapes and sizes, and it can be a noun or a verb. I think that this might give all of you some room for exploration and creative expression, to which I very much look forward!!

So let’s wheel around and have a blast with this theme!

Archimedes at Work!

The Falkirk Wheel is a creative solution to reduce the number of locks that have to be traversed in order to overcome a height difference between canals. This wheel raises boats by 24 meters, so that they need to traverse only 2 additional locks to overcome the remaining 11 meters of difference between the Forth and Clyde Canal and the Union Canal. It’s an impressive machine to see in action!

Tuesday Photo Challenge – Technology

May the tech be with you!

Welcome to week 158 of the Tuesday Photo Challenge!

With a great start into the 4th year, I was challenged to come up with a theme this week. The ones that came to mind had either been used or were too hard to verify that they were not a repeat… Then the theme of Technology came to mind, as that is what brought us all here. So your challenge for this week is to capture technology, old and new, in a way that connects it to you. I think that there are a lot of ways to go about this, even using technology to your best advantage!

Have fun and play with this challenge! Don’t let technology get in your way!!

Here’s a macro view of a disk enclosure…

Disk Enclosure

In this shot I wanted to get the sense of some abstract, infinite and eyeball bending. The speckling on the aluminum enclosure adds a bit of interest with the impinging light as a mysterious component. I’m going to have to print this one at some point, as I’m curious to see how this will look in a large format…
