Wednesday Window – pt 35

Join this Wednesday’s Window journey showcasing some frosty beauty and diffraction amidst the chill of winter mornings.

As part of the grand, albeit quiet, return engagement with the blogosphere, I came across a recent photo of a window, so it only makes sense to continue the series of Wednesday Window posts.

Those who have enjoyed (endured) the recent spate of rather chilly, frigid days will relate to this window…

Crystalline Morning

During a stretch of exceptionally cold days, there were mornings when the sun would shine through the garage door window to present structures of crystal and beauty. The form may be attractive, but going outside on one of these mornings was not the most welcoming feeling!

This is my mid-week contribution to the Monday Window thread, a creation of Ludwig Keck. To read more about Ludwig, check this page.

Blue Diamond on the Beach

Diamond Beach in Iceland offers endless photographic opportunities. In this post we enjoy the intense blue hues of glacier ice.

It’s time for another post to cover more of Diamond Beach in Iceland. It’s been a while since I published on this topic (Diamond in the Rough). This is just one of those locations, where I could photograph for days and never be done! Diamond Beach is a paradise for photographers who enjoy discovering shapes in nature with a leaning towards Black&White.

Here’s the image that I decided to take a closer look at…

Blue Diamond

This chunk of glacier ice was pretty close to the waterline and likely to be picked up by the incoming tide. What caught my eye was its color. Glacier ice has an intense blue color due to its density with very few air bubbles. As a result, longer wavelengths of light are absorbed and shorter ones are reflected.

Just a chip of the old glacier, it will travel until it is dissipated into the Atlantic Ocean.

Diamond in the Rough

Another image from Diamond Beach in Iceland, where ice and sand juxtapose.

In last week’s post about Diamond Beach (Diamond Beach Abstract), I spoke of the impact of the seasons on the display of rough diamonds. There may not be a lot of opportunities in Winter to get the sun glistening through the ice. That does open up the possibility of a different mood presented in each image. During my visit in February of 2024, there was beautiful subdued lighting on the beach.

Here’s another image from that day…

Diamond in the Rough

Even with muted sunlight, this large diamond has an internal glisten to it. As it stands against the black sands of the beach, it shows Nature’s presence. Albeit it a small piece of the glacier, the ice is filled with beauty.

In particular, I find the structure and contrast between ice and sand fascinating. The experience in Winter is worth it, especially as there are few, if any, distractions!

Diversity of the Earth – pt. 1

Where water and life meet

This weeks WordPress Weekly Photo Challenge has the theme of Earth, which is appropriate, given that Saturday is Earth Day.  So I figured that I would do a weeklong series of different views of the Earth that I have experienced.  Feel free to join in with the fun!

The first one, highlights some of the interesting aspects of our planet, such as water, a biosphere, temperature variations and the colors green and blue…

Frozen-Wachusett-Tree-lw4o8182
Frozen Tree in Wachusett Reservoir

This image dates back just over 11 years on a chilly March day in 2006.  Due to wind and water movement, the ice tends to creep up on the shores of Wachusett Reservoir, which caused this lone tree on an outcropping to become entangled.

Technical Details

This image was captured with Canon EOS 1D MkII using an EF 70-200mm f/2.8L lens.  Exposure settings were at 1/400 second and f/11 with 200 ISO.  It was a rather chilly shot!
