Thursday Throwback – 18

In 2011, Art in the Park celebrated diverse art installations in Elm Park, Worcester, Massachusetts. Among the featured works was Antoinette Prien Schultze’s “Temple of Roses,” a stunning glass and stainless steel sculpture.

Today, I am taking you back to the year 2011 and an event close to home. Art in the Park is a celebration of wonderful, inspiring art installations in Elm Park in the city of Worcester, Massachusetts. Artists’ submissions for this event include a variety of installations with lots of different materials. It’s always fun to take in these amazing works and experience them under lots of different weather conditions.

Here’s an image I captured of one of the works of art…

Temple of Roses – Art by Antoinette Prien Schultze

In this image I capture a detail of the Temple of Roses work by Antoinette Prien Schultze. The glass and stainless steel temple shape sits on granite (out of view in my image). This inspired me to use a reflector behind the sculpture to create the sense of a strong solar disk behind the temple shape. For me this connected with the name of the artwork, Temple of Roses.

For more of Antoinette Prien Schultze’s outdoor sculptures please take a look at this page. I hope you enjoy!

Thursday Throwback – 15

A throwback image from 2009, taken during an exploration of mill buildings and waterways.

Oh yes, there are plenty of photos to process from our trip to Egypt and they will end up in posts. Today, I’m doing a straightforward throwback to the year 2009.

Here’s a photo from that year…

Holyoke Non Sequitur

This image came from an exploration to find some interesting mill buildings and their associated waterways. It was the first time in my life that I saw this collection of items in a single viewing. Of course, you see what struck me right away!

I figured that ‘Holyoke Non Sequitur’ made for an apt title.

Thursday Throwback – Egypt

This week, the focus is on the temple complex at Dendera, near Qena, particularly the temple of Hathor, the goddess of love and joy.

Another opportunity for a jump back into antiquity this week, as I’m still going through lots of images! This week we’re visiting an amazing temple complex at Dendera, which is near Qena. The most significant temple in this complex is that of Hathor, the goddess of love, beauty, music, fertility and joy.

Here’s a detail from that temple…

Horus in Judgment

Here we see a bit of detail of the gods sitting in judgment. As conservators have been working hard on cleaning the layers of soot and dirt from this temple, we can see the stunning colors. The soot was mainly due to a lot of temples being used for shelter during Roman occupation, as christians were often persecuted and stayed away from the major cities.

I will do a longer post on this temple in the next couple of weeks, as it has lots of interesting features.

Thursday Throwback – Travel

Reflecting on the final stage of our Egyptian travels along the Nile. This trip exceeded expectations, leaving a desire for more time to appreciate the experiences and connections made.

As we’re in the final stage of our Egyptian travels, a look back at how people would have traveled in times past. Nowadays, we jet around the world, cruising in comfort whether in the air or on the river. We can still imagine that the pace might have been a bit different in previous centuries.

Here’s a taste of what it might have been…

Camels along the Nile

These camels were just happily grazing near the banana plants, foraging on all the tidbits that interest them. It would have been a very different experience for us, if we’d traveled by camel. I wonder if the slower pace would allow us more time to breathe in the culture, landscape and antiquities.

This trip to Egypt was nothing short of amazing, exceeding all our expectations. The only thing that could make it better is to have even more time to appreciate all we saw, all the people we met… Maybe next time?

Thursday Throwback – 4

Photography often involves identifying interesting subjects beyond the obvious beauty. A moment in a Chester, CT, fairground bathroom, with striking lines and light.

A lot of photography is about recognizing what might make an interesting image, which is not always the most obvious, beautiful subject matter. Sometimes it’s seeing some lines, a splash of light that works in a certain manner, or just that situation where you think you might be able to elevate what you’re seeing a little bit by framing it just right. There really are a lot of different elements that can make a photo one that our eyes want to come back to.

Today’s image came from a rather interesting moment when I walked into the bathroom at the Chester, Connecticut, fairground, bright and early, before most agility competitors had arrived. Something just struck me…

The Bathroom

Granted, fairground bathrooms are not the prettiest architecture or interior scenery that make us want to pick up our camera and photograph it to our heart’s desire. When I turned my head and noticed the lines and the light striking the side of the barrel and the floor, it caught something in my mind to cause me to go get my tripod and camera to capture this scene. I did get some odd looks when someone else walked into the bathroom, as photographing in a bathroom is not what one might expect (it was rather early).

This wound up making a fantastic print, which hangs in our bathroom at home, so I get to see it pretty frequently and still havent’ tired of it yet.

Throwback Thursday

A burst of color for Thursday!

I have to admit that it’s fun to go back through some of my older images! It’s really cool to see how my ‘eye’ has evolved over the years, and also interesting to see some images that I still really like after many years.

This is one of those images…

Colors of the Wind

This image came about as I noticed the wind spinner that was sitting close to where I was photographing dog agility. It gave me the opportunity to play around a bit with exposure timing to get just the amount of blur that I was looking for.

Captured back in 2005 with a Canon EOS 1D MkII and an EF 70-200mm f/2.8L lens and 1.4x extender. Exposure time was 1/25s to get this effect.

Throwback Thursday

Small town charm for the victory!

Sometimes miracles happen, such as Wednesday’s result of the French Cup match between Olympique de Marseille and FC Annecy; it was a dramatic result that went to a penalty shootout win for Annecy! This touched me as I visited Annecy many years ago, from which I have a slide that I had scanned a couple of years back…

Shopping in Annecy

My guess is that this image is from 1984 or 1985, when I worked for Digital Equipment Corporation and went on a business trip to visit our site in Annecy. It is a beautifully situated town in the Haute Savoie. When I saw the underdogs emerge victorious over mighty Olympique, I couldn’t help but think back to this visit!

Throwback Thursday?

Going back through the ages!

Looking back across the years, I thought about those days before COVID… aka before the missing years!

And I remember our trip to Italy, so here are some images from a walk across the forum…

It’s good to think back across the years, in this case we were there in May of 2017. It was wonderful to be in Italy and enjoy both antiquity and food!
