Snaefellsnes Sunset

Photography in Iceland during winter offers advantages. One of these is that dramatic sunsets and sunrises are more easily available.

A possible advantage of photography in Iceland during winter is that you don’t have to stay up late to catch a sunset. Similarly, there was no need to get up early for a spectacular sunrise! Shooting days in February are a lot shorter than those in July or August! With the Sun a bit lower in the sky, the hours in the day are all amazing.

Here’s a shot that I captured as sunset was getting closer…

Snaefellsnes Sunset

We had been doing some photography around the black church in Budir, and it didn’t quite satisfy my inner eye. There were definitely some good shots among those, but nothing that pulled together the sense of drama that I wanted. So I went exploring across the snowfield to the west of the church.

This is one of the landscapes that I found. The light raking across the snow-covered field and already long shadows piqued my interest. This image stimulates not only the visual cortex, but also works its magic on my limbic system. There’s something with a bit of mystery here. That includes the footprints in the snow…

iPhone Friday

Winter morning with the ‘Yoga Tree’. Enjoy the moments before the big snowstorm…

As I was looking through my smartphone shots, I thought it might be interesting to select an oldie! Then I remembered that it was 10 years ago that we had a week of phenomenal snowfall. It was epic and I got some rather cool (literally) photos out of that storm.

For this one, let’s visit an old friend…

Winter Morning

Yes, we welcome back the ‘Yoga Tree’ in one of her majestic poses! On this morning, about a day before the big storm rolled in, I managed to get one of those lovely winter mornings. As the sun highlights the tree, and tank, we get a moment of stillness before the storm.

Snowy Sunday Serenity

The tranquil beauty of snow-covered landscapes, with an image of the Oakdale Power Station on the Quinapoxet.

One of the aspect of Winter that I really enjoy is the quiet that exists in snow-covered landscapes. There is something magical about snow’s ability to muffle the noises that surround us. Today’s capture focuses on that and hopes to give a sense of that serenity.

Here’s a view from above…

Clean Power

This view is of the Oakdale Power Station by the Quinapoxet river in West Boylston. As part of the water transfer operations between the Quabbin and Wachusett Reservoirs, this station generates hydroelectric energy. The water transfer operations occur for 6-10 months of the year, as part of the water supply chain in this area.

This shot was captured with a DJI Mavic 3 on a chilly Saturday.

Share Your Desktop – February 2023

On a chilly day in January…

Through one of the blog’s that I follow, Cee Neuner’s Photo Challenges, I saw Cee’s post for a Share Your Desktop challenge, hosted by Clare’s Cosmos blog.

So I figured…why not contribute a photo to Clare’s Share Your Desktop – February 2023 fun!

A Snowy Beach

This shot came about in 2015, on January 31 to be precise. We just had some massive snowfall and a group of us wen to visit shore locations and beaches to capture this winter beauty. This was the winter when we got more than 6 feet of snow total; I long for another winter like that, as this year it has been nothing of the sort.
